P242F Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Restriction - Ash Accumulation

Ash from engine oil additives builds up in the DPF and cannot be burned off during regeneration. The ECU estimates the ash load using calibrated models and differential pressure readings, and sets P242F when ash accumulation exceeds the calibrated limit.

Common causes

  • High-mileage filter reaching its ash capacity
  • Excessive engine oil consumption
  • Engine oil that does not meet the required low-ash specification
  • Faulty differential pressure sensor giving incorrect readings
  • Ash counter not reset after filter cleaning or replacement

Typical symptoms

  • Check engine light and/or DPF warning light on
  • Reduced power or limp mode
  • Frequent regeneration attempts
  • Increased fuel consumption

P242F and NuoVolta

If the DPF has been removed for off-road or motorsport use, where permitted by law, the NuoVolta DPF / ADV Removal solution adjusts the ECU calibration and the DTC removal feature can disable this code. On a road vehicle, professional filter cleaning or replacement is the usual repair.

Diagnose and repair real faults first. Removing or disabling emission systems is only permitted where allowed by law, for example for off-road or motorsport use.
