P2002 Particulate Filter Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
The ECU checks the particulate filter's ability to trap soot, mainly using the differential pressure sensor across the filter together with its soot model. P2002 is set when the readings indicate that filtration efficiency has dropped below the calibrated threshold, for example because the filter is damaged or missing.
Common causes
- Cracked, melted or damaged filter substrate
- Particulate filter removed or emptied
- Faulty differential pressure sensor or split, blocked sensor hoses
- Exhaust leaks upstream of the filter
- Wiring or connector faults on the pressure sensor
Typical symptoms
- Check engine light (MIL) on
- Visible smoke from the tailpipe
- Regeneration disabled or abnormal regeneration behaviour
- Emissions test failure
P2002 and NuoVolta
When the particulate filter has been removed for off-road or motorsport use, where permitted by law, the NuoVolta DPF / ADV Removal solution (or GPF Removal on petrol engines) adjusts the ECU calibration and the DTC removal feature can disable this code. If a filter is still fitted, inspect the filter and pressure sensor first.
Related codes
Diagnose and repair real faults first. Removing or disabling emission systems is only permitted where allowed by law, for example for off-road or motorsport use.
