P0101 Mass or Volume Air Flow (MAF) Circuit Range/Performance

The ECU compares the airflow measured by the MAF sensor with the airflow expected from engine speed, load, throttle position and manifold pressure. P0101 is set when the MAF reading is implausible compared with these values.

Common causes

  • Dirty or contaminated MAF sensor element
  • Air leaks between the MAF sensor and the engine
  • Blocked air filter or intake restriction
  • Faulty MAF sensor
  • EGR or boost faults affecting the airflow plausibility check

Typical symptoms

  • Check engine light (MIL) on
  • Hesitation, poor acceleration or reduced power
  • Rough idle or stalling
  • Black smoke on diesel engines

P0101 and NuoVolta

If the MAF sensor has been removed or the intake modified for off-road or motorsport use, where permitted by law, the NuoVolta MAF Removal solution adjusts the ECU calibration to run without the MAF signal and the DTC removal feature can disable this code. Otherwise, clean or replace the sensor and check for intake leaks first.

Diagnose and repair real faults first. Removing or disabling emission systems is only permitted where allowed by law, for example for off-road or motorsport use.
