Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)
P0406 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Sensor A Circuit High
The ECU monitors the voltage of the EGR position or feedback sensor. P0406 is set when the signal stays above the maximum expected voltage for a specified time.
Common causes
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Open sensor ground circuit
- Faulty EGR position sensor
- Damaged connector or water ingress
Typical symptoms
- Check engine light (MIL) on
- EGR operation disabled by the ECU
- Rough idle or reduced performance on some vehicles
P0406 and NuoVolta
When the EGR valve and its sensor have been removed for off-road or motorsport use, where permitted by law, the NuoVolta EGR Removal solution adjusts the ECU calibration and the DTC removal feature can disable this code. Otherwise, check the sensor ground and signal wiring first.
