P0404 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Circuit Range/Performance

The ECU compares the commanded EGR valve position with the feedback from the EGR position sensor. P0404 is set when the actual position stays outside the expected range or the valve responds too slowly.

Common causes

  • Carbon build-up restricting valve movement
  • Sticking or worn EGR valve
  • Faulty EGR position sensor
  • Wiring or connector problems
  • Low or unstable vacuum supply on vacuum-operated systems

Typical symptoms

  • Check engine light (MIL) on
  • Rough idle or hesitation
  • Reduced power or limp mode on some vehicles

P0404 and NuoVolta

If the EGR system has been removed or blanked for off-road or motorsport use, where permitted by law, the NuoVolta EGR Removal solution adjusts the ECU calibration and the DTC removal feature can disable this code. On a fitted system, clean or replace the EGR valve before considering any software change.

Diagnose and repair real faults first. Removing or disabling emission systems is only permitted where allowed by law, for example for off-road or motorsport use.
