P0136 O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

The downstream oxygen sensor, located after the catalytic converter, is mainly used to monitor catalyst efficiency. P0136 is set when the ECU detects an implausible signal or a circuit fault from this sensor.

Common causes

  • Faulty downstream oxygen sensor
  • Shorted or open wiring
  • Exhaust leak near the sensor
  • Corroded or contaminated connector

Typical symptoms

  • Check engine light (MIL) on
  • Catalyst monitor not completed (readiness not set)
  • Emissions test failure
  • Usually little or no change in drivability

P0136 and NuoVolta

If the catalytic converter and downstream sensor have been removed for off-road or motorsport use, where permitted by law, the NuoVolta Lambda / O2 Removal or Catalyst Removal solution adjusts the ECU calibration and the DTC removal feature can disable this code. Otherwise, test the sensor and wiring first.

Diagnose and repair real faults first. Removing or disabling emission systems is only permitted where allowed by law, for example for off-road or motorsport use.
