P0410 Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

On petrol engines with secondary air injection, a pump blows fresh air into the exhaust during cold start to help the catalytic converter warm up quickly. The ECU monitors the system, typically through oxygen sensor response or a pressure sensor, and sets P0410 when the expected airflow is not detected.

Common causes

  • Failed secondary air pump
  • Stuck or faulty combination (check) valve
  • Blocked or carbon-clogged air passages
  • Faulty relay, fuse or wiring
  • Leaking or disconnected hoses or vacuum lines

Typical symptoms

  • Check engine light (MIL) on
  • Unusual noise from the air pump at cold start
  • Emissions test failure
  • Usually no noticeable change in drivability

P0410 and NuoVolta

If the secondary air system has been removed or disabled for off-road or motorsport use, where permitted by law, the NuoVolta Secondary Air Injection Removal solution adjusts the ECU calibration and the DTC removal feature can disable this code. On a fitted system, check the pump, valve and air passages first.

Diagnose and repair real faults first. Removing or disabling emission systems is only permitted where allowed by law, for example for off-road or motorsport use.
