Many modern engines use an electronically controlled (map-controlled) thermostat. Instead of opening only at a fixed temperature, the thermostat is controlled by the engine control unit (ECU), which sets the target coolant temperature according to engine load, speed and ambient conditions. Typically, the engine runs warmer at part load for efficiency and cooler at high load to protect the engine.
With this module, thermostat-related calibration values in the ECU software, such as target coolant temperatures and thermostat control, are adjusted, and related DTCs are handled where needed.
